Affidavit: Man admitted to drinking, playing with gun before fatal shooting

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - We now know more details about the late night shooting that killed a man in D'Iberville on Thursday. According to court documents, Michael Pittman told police he and Rondal Butler, Jr. were "playing" with a handgun before Butler was shot in the head.

Pittman was charged with manslaughter in relation to the shooting.

According to the criminal affidavit filed in Harrison County District Court, D'Iberville police responded to the shooting in a unit at Timber Grove Apartments on Auto Mall Pkwy., and that's where officers found Butler suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Butler was taken to Merit Health Biloxi, where he later died.

Police Chief Wayne Payne said Pittman first reported the shooting as an attempted suicide. The affidavit says the story Pittman told police did not match up with evidence found by investigators.

According to the affidavit, Pittman told officers on the scene he had been drinking beer and vodka before he started playing with his handgun. He told police he and Butler had played with the weapon in the past.

Pittman reportedly told investigators he placed the gun on the coffee table, and that's when Butler picked up the weapon and started playing with it.

The affidavit says Pittman told police Butler put the gun to his head, and that's when he heard the gunshot. Investigators said evidence from the scene shows Butler did not shoot himself.

Pittman's bond was set at $100,000 for the manslaughter charge. He bonded out of jail the day after the shooting.
