PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Hundreds packed an Ingalls shipyard gym in a public event to help a very special cause.

"Today is the 5k on the Causeway. The proceeds of this event goes to the Special Olympic of Mississippi," said Ingalls Human Resources Vice President, Edmond Hughes.

The race, which was delayed due to inclement weather, marks the fifth anniversary of the event. Organizers say the numbers seem to increase every year.

"I'm so surprised that there are so many people here with the weather being so bad. It just shows the dedication of these runners and Ingalls shipbuilding here today," said Mississippi Special Olympics Public Relations Manager, Jim Beaugez.

Though many come for the challenge of the race, the real reason for the event lies in the people who the race benefits. Ingalls presented a $13,000 check to the Special Olympics of Mississippi. The proceeds will go far in helping athletes participating in the games.

"This is not just an Ingalls event, but it's also a community event. So you can see there are individuals from across the community that take part in this event and it's really exciting," said Hughes.
