ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX) -

The viral video of a St. Martin student punching a girl on a school bus Aug. 25 has led to charges being filed.

The mother of the girl who threw the punch - who asked not to be identified - says her daughter will go to Jackson County Youth Court on Sept. 27 to face simple assault charges.

In addition, the girl was suspended from school for five days after the attack and sent to alternative school until after Christmas break. She has also been banned from riding the bus for the rest of the school year.

The mother says that while she does not condone her daughter's action, the viral video that's been shared on social media is hurting both children. She issued the following statement to WLOX News Now:

"There is two sides to this this issue. My daughter has been bullied and taunted by the teen she hit on the bus for weeks.

This issue has been going on for weeks before the physical altercation occurred. The social media betrayed my daughter as a vicious attacker on an innocent person. My daughter should have handled the issue without the physical contact, I don't agree with the way she handle the issue nor do I tolerate violence. My daughter was brought up in a loving home. I feel like the bus driver [sic] didn't do her job and fail to protect both teen because she did not intervene. My daughter is not a bad person and she is very sorry for the way she reacted. Every time the video is aired she can't look at it.

My daughter has been disciplined at home and at school. She is in alternative school, she can not ride the school for the rest of the school year and she has to appear in Jackson County Youth Court."
