GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The sound of shovels hitting the ground and dirt flying Wednesday marked the beginning of construction of South Mississippi's next St. Jude Dream Home. Sapphire Homes builders, St. Jude Children's Hospital supporters, and St. Jude representatives all joined together to break ground for the Dream Home being built just off the beach in a cul-de-sac in West Gulfport.
Sapphire Homes is building the three bedroom, two and a half bath home in the new Oak Shadows Subdivision. Dream Home builder Jason Garner said, "It's going to be about 2,500 square feet. It'll be a two story with a wraparound porch. It's going to have some views of the Mississippi Sound. It's going to have a separate garage that you will walk under cover to. Lots of landscaping, you can see the live oaks here. So it's going to be a really tremendous home."
Garner added, the Dream Home will have granite throughout, hardwood floors and crown molding. He emphasized that the Dream Home will be a fortified home. "We put impact windows and doors and lots of strappings on the roof," said Garner. "So it will be a really strong home. It's being built close to the beach and building a fortified home is some of the steps you take to get affordable insurance."
Tickets for the St. Jude Dream Home go on sale after the first of the year. Dream Home tickets cost $100 each. All the money raised goes toward helping children battle cancer, which is why Garner said Sapphire Homes is building the Dream Home. "We like to give back as much as we can. And, this is definitely an opportunity for us to really do some good. Lots of children battling cancer, you know every day, and this is just a tremendous opportunity to help the community."
The drawing for the Dream Home will take place in the spring on WLOX ABC.
