MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - The search is on for a new police chief in the city of Moss Point now that Art McClung has submitted his resignation letter to the mayor. Moss Point aldermen and a small group of citizens were gathered for a budget meeting Tuesday. But before talking dollars and cents, the city clerk read aloud the former chief's letter of resignation.
"Please accept this letter as a form of notification that I have resigned from my position with the Moss Point Police Department effective immediately. Making this decision has been difficult, as I have enjoyed working with you and my colleagues," read the clerk.
The former chief found himself in hot water after dash cam footage surfaced from a traffic stop where he was pulled over by Pascagoula police for speeding. He admitted to officers he had been drinking, but instead of being arrested, McClung was simply given a ride home.
When Moss Point city leaders got wind of it, they gave McClung an ultimatum: Resign in the next seven days or be terminated.
Now that McClung's resignation is official, Mayor Broomfield said the city will move forward to fill his position.
"Probably within the next three or four weeks we will probably put together something to submit to the press, advertising for the police chief position," said Broomfield.
McClung was sworn in as police chief in 2015. Less than two years later, city leaders are looking for yet another police chief.
"When you stop and think about it and put it in retrospect, yeah, it does seem like yesterday that we are looking for a chief," said Broomfield.
Until a new chief is hired, Deputy Chief Brandon Ashley will continue as acting chief.
