BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Neighbors in the Monticello subdivision of Baton Rouge are praising one of their own.

Darryles Simmons makes living driving a dump truck, but when floodwaters engulfed his neighborhood, Simmons used his truck and made numerous trips hauling families out of the neighborhood barely staying ahead of the rising floodwaters.

Simmons said he can’t remember how many people he rescued, but he said it was "a lot." He does remember the kids who were happy to jump into the back of his dump truck in waist deep waters.

"I just feel like a normal guy. If you're in need, help not just saving your life, I'm willing to help you," Simmons said.

One of those rescued said Simmons was an angel sent by God, rescuing elderly people and anyone who was trapped in the neighborhood.

The Monticello neighborhood was one of the more heavily damaged neighborhoods in East Baton Rouge Parish.

"It was just unreal," said Tammy Luck-Coleman. "I never would've imagined anything like that happening. The feeling that the came over me when we actually had to climb over – it was just unbelievable, for hours it was just him and his truck."

One his last trip, the water got too high and flooded out Simmons’ dump truck. A group of thankful neighbors are raising money for Simmons. Anyone who would like to donate to their efforts can visit the group's YouCaring page
