Stranded Dolphin Dies, Despite Care At Marine Life

"Cotton," the rare spotted dolphin that was being cared for at Marine Life in Gulfport, died late Monday morning.

Cotton was taken to Marine Life over the weekend after it was found stranded in Alabama's Cotton Bayou, outside of its natural habitat.

Alabama did not have a facility to handle the unique dolphin, so he was brought to Gulfport for special care.

"The animal came in very traumatized. Very little is known about these animals. This was a good learning experience. At least we found out something that we didn't know before," Marine Life director Moby Solangi said.

The dolphin has been taken to LSU's Veterinary School where a series of tests will be run to determine the cause of death. Those results are expected in the next few weeks.
