La. Dept. of Ag. sends team to assist with pet shelter at Lamar Dixon

Over 14,000 animals have been rescued from flood waters as of Thursday, August 18. Many pets are quickly returned to their owners. Others, however, have not been as lucky.

Temporary animal shelters have been established a multiple locations.

"The LDAF also continues to transport and store commodities for food banks and shelters. We will also assist in moving 1800 dozen eggs donated by Cal-main Foods to Second Harvest Food Bank in Harahan," said Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain. 

A Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) strike team was deployed Wednesday to the Lamar Dixon Expo Center to assist in managing the pet shelter. Currently, there are 450 dogs, 109 cats, 333 horses, 139 cattle, 44 pigs, 123 goats, and 27 exotic animals.

Abandoned or stranded livestock are being housed at Dominique’s Stockyard in North Baton Rouge. Cattle housing is also available at Amite Stockyard. Pets not co-located with their owners are also being housed at Dixon Correctional.

So far, the LDAF has provided 770 pet crates, 281 bowls, 1680 pounds of dry food and 24 cans of wet food. Other food donations and supplies have been provided through private donations.

Celtic Studio Shelter:

  • 180 dogs
  • 20 cats 
  • 1 exotic

Veterinary services are being provided by the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART) with assistance from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and the American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty (ASPCA).  

The LDAF has also provided 2775 gallons of fuel and 2975 gallons of diesel for emergency response vehicles, generators and pumping stations.
