Over 14,000 animals have been rescued from flood waters as of Thursday, August 18. Many pets are quickly returned to their owners. Others, however, have not been as lucky.

Temporary animal shelters have been established a multiple locations.

"The LDAF also continues to transport and store commodities for food banks and shelters. We will also assist in moving 1800 dozen eggs donated by Cal-main Foods to Second Harvest Food Bank in Harahan," said Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain.

A Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) strike team was deployed Wednesday to the Lamar Dixon Expo Center to assist in managing the pet shelter. Currently, there are 450 dogs, 109 cats, 333 horses, 139 cattle, 44 pigs, 123 goats, and 27 exotic animals.
