BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo in Baker will reopen Wednesday morning as the parish continues to cleanup from the historic flooding.

According to director Phil Frost, the zoo is set to open at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and will return to its regular schedule.

"From the many phone calls, emails, and Facebook inquiries we've received, we realize the importance of having a place like the zoo for families to visit and come together, even if only as a distraction for a couple hours," Frost said.

Frost said the animals looked good and the workers, some whom have flood damage in their own homes, are still working to feed and care for the zoo animals.

He said out of the zoo's 85 employees, 20 percent of them have major losses from the flooding. He added that eight of them lost everything.

"Yet some have been coming to work to care for 'their animals' through it all. I couldn't be prouder of our staff," Frost said.

The zoo watched the water levels rising during the storm as there has been lots of flood damage.
