D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - The impact of the opening of the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort in D'Iberville is already being felt in a big way. The $300 million, 300-room casino resort has been open for just over six months now.
City manager Clay Jones said the city has already received about $1.6 million in additional revenue since the casino opened. That includes about $1.1 million in actual casino taxes paid to the city, and an increase of about $500,000 in sales taxes.
Businesses located near the casino are experiencing an increase in customer traffic as well. Those businesses range from a beauty salon to a business that boards and grooms dogs and cats. Local restaurants are also seeing the impact of the Scarlet Pearl.
With thousands of tourists visiting the city every month, Jones says he is now in the process of beefing up public safety. Already, several additional police officers and firefighters have been hired, with more to come.
Doug Walker is taking a closer look at the impact of the casino. Watch for the story later tonight on WLOX News Now and on WLOX.com.
