PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - Members of Cherokee Concerned Citizens say they've been there before. An overnight explosion and subsequent fire at a nearby industry, and they're left wondering what's happening and whether they should evacuate.
Members of the group live just west of the industrial park at Bayou Cassotte. For more than a year now, they've been lobbying state and county officials for an early warning system and better communication from both industry and emergency officials.
"We're sitting on a time bomb," group leader Barbara Weckesser said.
Julie Hambey said she heard the explosion and then saw the flames.
"But I didn't hear any sirens or see any emergency response," Hambey said. "It was frightening not knowing what's going on."
Several neighbors from along Cherokee Dr. sat beneath Weckesser's car port and commiserated about this latest frightening experience.
