Mother asked to 'unlatch' nursing infant at water park

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Jackson County woman claims she was breastfeeding her infant son Saturday at Gulf Islands Waterpark when the unexpected happened. Candace Setosta said she was asked by a supervisor to cover up her baby with a towel to feed him.

"...Mind you its 91 degrees and 100% humidity here in south Mississippi... I nicely told them no it was really hot and I would not put him under a towel," Setosta wrote on Facebook.

Setosta said that's when she was asked to 'unlatch him and go to her office'.

"Again I said no, I'm not going to UNLATCH him and take him to your office to eat," Setosta wrote. "I reminded her that legally I can feed my baby anywhere I choose... She then said that I shouldn't feed him in the "cafe" in front of all the other children... Because families were "offended!""

According to Mississippi's law, women can breastfeed a child breastfeed in any public place.

Setosta's Facebook post detailing her side of the story quickly spread on social media. Many people commented on Gulf Islands Waterpark's Facebook page about the incident.

The waterpark has replied to every post on its page, including Setosta's.

"Candace, after having read your story, I would like to offer you a heartfelt apology, from one mother to another. I am so sorry that you and you're son Max were made to feel like anything less than welcome guests at our park. It is our best intention to allow all guests to have a more than pleasant and enjoyable experience. You and all mothers are more than welcome to breastfeed in our park. If there is anything in the future that we can do to accommodate you, please let us know."

"The issue has been addressed with the team member," Gulf Islands Waterpark commented on another post. "Additionally we are making sure that our entire team understands the protections provided by law to breast feeding moms."

The waterpark also wrote all breastfeeding mothers are welcome at the park.
