OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Traffic is once again flowing freely over the Fort Bayou Bridge in Ocean Springs. The bridge was closed to traffic for about an hour Thursday after a mechanical problem prevented it from closing and locking.

Bridge tender Tracy Lawson said a shrimp boat needed the bridge raised at 1:21 p.m., but the nose locks would not engage or disengage. Lawson said it is his 'first malfunction' since taking over in November.

Lawson has one message for drivers who may get frustrated when problems like this arise.

“When the bridge arms are down, don’t drive around them.”
