PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Interstate 59 northbound near the seven mile marker is down to one lane as crews work to clear a single-vehicle accident involving an overturned 18-wheeler.
Officials with the Picayune Police Department tell us the truck was hauling 40,000 pounds of Popeyes biscuits when it flipped around 7:15 Wednesday morning.
Assistant Police Chief Jeremy Magri said the biscuits remained inside the trailer, but before the truck can be flipped back over, all of the biscuits must be taken out of the damaged truck and moved to another 18-wheeler. That will take some time.
According to a Facebook post from the Picayune Police Department, traffic was diverted at exit 6 to Hwy 11. or Sycamore Rd. to West Union Rd. for some time as crews worked to open one northbound lane.
Authorities said drivers coming through the area should expect delays, because it could take another six to eight hours to open the other lane.
Magri said two people, Gilbert and Tina Witte, were in the truck. Both were taken to Forrest General Hospital. No injuries are being reported at this time. Gilbert, 49, and Tina, 45, are from Alexander City, AL.
