GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gulfport Police Department spokesman says officers arrested murder suspect Juwan Rashard Johnson. They reportedly captured him Wednesday night in Leesburg, Fla., located in central Florida.
"It is a relief that Johnson is in custody. We can move forward in assuring justice. Last night, the North Gulfport community clearly stated that we, as a city , are going to take on violent crime. Together, we are going to aggressively go after those few that are causing these crimes," said Police Chief Leonard Papania.
Johnson is being held at the Lake County Jail awaiting extradition.
Police say Johnson, 18, shot and killed Stanton Saunders on June 8. Investigators say Saunders, 21, was trying to run away when Johnson shot him several times in the back.
After the shooting, Saunders' family pleaded with the public not to react to the shooting with more violence.
