Residents reportedly file appeal; FunTime USA opening delayed

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Community members who were hopeful for the return of FunTime USA are facing yet another delay.

In a Wednesday night email from FunTime developer Rafe O'Neal, Georgia Place residents who oppose the Beach Blvd. redevelopment have reportedly filed an appeal against the Gulfport Planning Commission.

The commission gave the go-ahead for developers with a 7-2 vote in May, following a delay caused by a zoning challenge. Following the meeting, none of the residents who opposed the development would comment.

According to O'Neal, the June appeal will halt the amusement park's 2016 opening.

O'Neal released as statement saying in part,

"While this was not an unexpected development, we continue to feel confident that we will get a fair decision from the Gulfport City Council concerning this matter when it is heard before them in August 2016....We have worked tirelessly, honestly and prudently with the City in the development of the new FunTime USA....Unfortunately, for the families and children of the Gulf Coast and for our visiting guests, this additional delay rules out any possibility that FunTime USA will open this year."
