Gulfport police working to track down murder suspect

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport police have named a suspect in the shooting that killed 21-year-old Stanton Saunders on June 8. Authorities are asking for your help to find 18-year-old Juwan Rashard Johnson.

Johnson is wanted for murder, and police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Gulfport Police Department spokesman Sgt. Damon McDaniel said investigators discovered Saunders and Johnson were fighting near Kentucky Ave. south of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. when Johnson pulled out a handgun and shot Saunders as he tried to run away.

Saunders ran to 34th Ave. near Ganges St., where he collapsed around 11:30 a.m. McDaniel said he was shot in the upper torso.

Saunders was taken to Memorial Hospital, where he died from his wounds a short time later.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Saunders' family feared more violence would plague the streets, and urged others to not retaliate for his killing. A vase filled with flowers was placed near where Saunders was found that morning. The vase reads "Stop killing each other."
