GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - South Mississippi's heat isn't stopping hundreds of kids from praying on the beach. Nearly 1,500 people from a Houston church are in town for a church retreat.

The group covered parts of the beach in Biloxi and Gulfport Monday morning. Organizers said they were praying and reading scriptures.

"What you saw this morning is what we call 'silent sounds'. It's where the kids will come on the beach for about 30 minutes and they have their material that we give them," said Eric Hystad of Second Baptist Church in Houston, TX. "It's a book that has their devotion for the morning, scriptures and questions. So they do that on the beach on the morning and in the afternoon."

Organizers said they'll be out on the beach every morning and afternoon until Thursday. Then in the evenings, the students will have a worship service at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

"This is our yearly beach retreat that we do every summer and we've been coming to Biloxi for the last three summers now," said Hystad.
