BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The University of Southern Mississippi's newest research vessel officially joined the fleet on Saturday.
The 60-foot vessel is named after longtime Gulf Coast Research Laboratory senior research scientist James S. "Jim" Franks.
The celebration happened at Point Cadet Marina in Biloxi. The nearly 100 people who attended the christening had the opportunity to go inside the vessel and explore the interior.
Speakers at the event included USM director Monty Graham, and even Jim Franks himself.
"We're so proud of Jim Franks and all that he has done for this lab, we're so happy that he can be apart of this celebration that honors his work," said Graham.
The vessel will remain in Biloxi at the Golden Nugget Dock until USM takes possession.
