GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Wednesday night, a community remembered a Gulfport man murdered last week. Dozens of friends and family members of 38-year-old Chavis Allen gathered to remember him, but also to spread awareness about ending violence in their community.
The group lit sky lanterns to honor Allen and agree he was well loved.
"He was a real good guy. Didn't bother nobody and did anything for the kids. Loved kids," said friend Robin Bracey.
"Everybody loved him and know that he's cared for," said Allen's daughter, Imari Collins.
"His memory is going to live on as long as we live. As long as we live," said cousin Fetty. "Violence is so bad here."
"We represent his memory and share his life," said another cousin, Wenoka Simmons.
Allen was shot to death last week at his home on Dogwood Ct. The man accused of his murder, 19-year-old Gary Perkins, is being held at the Harrison County jail on a $1 million bond.
