Biloxi catcher Rene Garcia had a hot bat Tuesday night with 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate. Both of Garcia's hits were doubles which led to two runs.
Shuckers (37-27) new short stop Gabriel Noriega went 2-for-4 with a double and scored two runs. First baseman Garrett Cooper was 2-for-4 with one RBI and scored a run in Biloxi's 6-4 victory over the Barons (27-38).
The win coupled with Pensacola losing to Montgomery 7-1 propelled the Shuckers back into a first-place tie atop the South Division standings with the Blue Wahoos.
Stephen Peterson (W, 7-0, 2.29 ERA) posted the win. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up 2 hits, no runs with 1 strike out.
Daniel Tillman (S,5,0.48 ERA) picked up his fifth save in pitching the top of the ninth inning. Tillman gave up two bloop singles to lead off the inning, but was able to keep Birmingham off the scoreboard.
Wei-Chung Wang started the game for Biloxi. The Barons belted 6 hits off Wang and scored two earned runs. He also had 5 strikeouts and one of the hits was a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning by Trey Michalczewski that gave Birmingham a 2-1 lead.
The Shuckers regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Birmingham came right back with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. An inning later Biloxi plated two runs and led 5-4 after seven innings.
The Shuckers scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
Biloxi didn't have much time to celebrate the win as the Shuckers loaded up on a bus and took off for Jacksonville opening a five-game road series with the Suns Wednesday night at 7:05.
Before the Barons-Shuckers game it was announced that infielder Nick Shaw had retired. In 39 games this season, the Shuckers shortstop batted .250 with 14 runs batted in.
