The Birmingham Barons (27-37) banged out 11 hits to sink the Shuckers (36-27) 9-2 at MGM Park on Monday. The Barons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Blair Walters slapped a single off Shuckers starting pitcher Jorge Ortega that placed Barons on first and third. Jake Peter would get a little piece of the ball and was thrown out at first, but Adam Engel raced home to give Birmingham the early lead.
The Barons plated two runs in the top of the third inning. The first-one was a solo-home run to right field off the bat of Eddy Alvarez.
Engel went 2 for 4, had one RBI and scored 2 runs. Trey Michalczewki had 2 hits in five trips to the plate, had one RBI and scored once.
First-baseball Keon Barnum also was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Ortega (L, 0-6, 4.38 ERA) suffered his sixth loss of the season and is still looking for his first win. He came up 9 hits, 8 runs, 6 earned with 1 base-on-balls and two strikeouts.
David Holmberg (W, 5-4, 3.82 ERA) got the win for the Barons. In six innings the Shuckers were able to bang out 8 hits but only 2 runs, both earned with one strikeout and one base-on-balls.
Gabriel Noriega had 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate and scored a run for the Shuckers. Nate Orf was 0 for 4 with one RBI.
The Barons and Shuckers clash again 7:10 p.m. Tuesday at MGM Park.
