Action Report: Don't fall for air duct cleaning scams

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - The Mississippi Better Business Bureau says it's best to go with a local company if you want your air ducts cleaned. Don't go with a company that says they're local and they're not.

Homeowners who fell for a $49 air duct cleaning service say they ended up paying several thousand dollars for mold remediation.

Angie's List says the National Air Duct Cleaners Association receives thousands of complaints about "blow and go" companies offering prices as low as $40.

AJ Giardina decided to call up a company that is currently advertising air duct cleaning for $49.95. The company spokesman says they are local and the company has a local phone number.

When asked where the company is located, the man on the phone quickly said, "We come to you, you don't come to us."

In a later phone call, the owner admitted they don't have a local office in Gulfport. The owner says he's in the process of hiring workers to do the air duct cleaning on the Coast.

The newspaper ad also says the company has trained certified technicians, but the owner says he will train the workers himself once they are hired.

John O'Hara with the Mississippi Better Business Bureau said, "Companies advertising a very low price of $49.95 for air duct cleaning  sounds too good to be true and that should send up a red flag."

Three local air conditioner companies in South Mississippi say the average cost to do air duct cleaning is about $200.
