ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. (AP) - A Louisiana State Penitentiary inmate has been seriously hurt in a fight with another inmate. The inmate was receiving intensive medical care after the fight early Sunday morning. Louisiana Department of Corrections spokesman Ken Pastorick said charges are pending against the alleged attacker. He said officials are awaiting information from an investigating.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - After saying an officer became stuck in traffic while driving to the shooting in New Orleans' Central Business District, police have arrested one man in the killing. News outlets report 19-year-old Quan Charles was arrested Sunday in the Aug. 14 shooting that killed 34-year-old May Francois. New Orleans police said last week their response time was delayed by how the call was dispatched.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana governor has appointed a former sheriff who pleaded guilty to misusing funds and mistreating inmates to a state commission that oversees legal compliance of used car dealers. The Advocate of Baton Rouge reports former Tensas Parish Sheriff Jeff Britt has his first meeting Monday. Records show Gov. John Bel Edwards pardoned Britt last year, nearly a decade after Britt was accused of beating handcuffed inmates and using public funds to pay off his credit card.

STEPHENSVILLE, La. (AP) - A researcher says the hard winter apparently killed much of an invasive weed that clogs waterways around Louisiana _ but it also killed many of the weevils raised to fight it. LSU AgCenter researcher Charlie Wahl says few north Louisiana landowners or agencies have asked for weevils to eat away at giant salvinia. He believes the plant was knocked back by the cold. But he says the salvinia weevils he's farming and those in the wild around the state also were knocked back.
