BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana House spurned a more than $360 million sales tax renewal that could partially plug a budget gap looming in five weeks. Rejection of the measure Friday raised questions about whether lawmakers can reach a tax deal to avoid deep cuts to education, health care and public safety programs in the financial year starting July 1.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. John Bel Edwards has agreed to make it harder to see how individual jurors voted in cases that end in split verdicts. The governor's office announced Friday that Edwards has signed the bill by Rep. Joseph Stagni, a Kenner Republican, into law. The Advocate reports the measure says polling slips "may be placed under seal," if the judge gives reasons. Once under seal, they may be unsealed only with a court order. If that happens, names of the jurors on the polling slips shall be kept secret.

MIAMI (AP) - Forecasters have issued tropical storm and storm surge watches for parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast as Subtropical Storm Alberto approaches. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday afternoon that the tropical storm watch has been issued from Indian Pass, Florida, westward to Grand Isle, Louisiana along a swath that also includes parts of Alabama and Mississippi. The storm surge watch is in effect for a stretch from Horseshoe Beach, Florida, to the mouth of the Mississippi River.

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A Federal Aviation Administration report says people appear to be living in the hangars at the Shreveport Downtown Airport, and that's just one of the problems that could jeopardize federal funding. The Shreveport Times says the findings presented Thursday also note the airport is operating at a loss and has failed to enforce regulations. The report says using airport hangars for a non-aeronautical purpose violates policy
