TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) - A man has been sentenced to death by lethal injection in Alabama for shooting and killing a teenager two years ago. News outlets report 24-year-old Peter Capote was sentenced Thursday by Colbert County Circuit Judge Hal Hughston Jr. in the death of 19-year-old Ki-Jana Freeman. Capote was found guilty April 24 of capital murder and first-degree assault in the March 1, 2016, shooting.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama is sending a National Guard helicopter and guardsmen to help patrol the Mexican border at the request of President Donald Trump's administration. Gov. Kay Ivey's office announced Friday that the helicopter and five guard members will support the Texas National Guard in partnership with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
MIAMI (AP) - Forecasters have issued tropical storm and storm surge watches for parts of the U.S. Gulf Coast as Subtropical Storm Alberto approaches. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday afternoon that the tropical storm watch has been issued from Indian Pass, Florida, westward to Grand Isle, Louisiana along a swath that also includes parts of Alabama and Mississippi. The storm surge watch is in effect for a stretch from Horseshoe Beach, Florida, to the mouth of the Mississippi River.
CHILDERSBURG, Ala. (AP) - Alabama prison officials say a state inmate is on the loose after escaping in central Alabama. A statement from the Department of Corrections says 47-year-old Anthony Scott Marler fled a work-release center in Childersburg early Friday. Records show Marler was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2014 after being convicted of manufacturing drugs in Clay County.
