GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It was a frightening scene on I-10 Wednesday evening after a car veered off the road, smashing a guard rail just east of Hwy. 49.
Inches from tumbling down an embankment at the Three Rivers Rd. overpass., it looked as it no one in the Toyota Camry could have survived. But, they did.
"The vehicle was eastbound on interstate 10 in the left lane when it slightly drifted toward the south side of the roadway," said Sgt. Damon McDaniel with the Gulfport Police Department. "After striking the guard rail, the vehicle spun around and overturned onto the driver's side of the vehicle."
A man, woman and two children were in the car when it crashed just after 6 p.m. Only the male driver, who was removed from the vehicle by Gulfport firefighters, was injured.
"He complained about some pain and injury to the lower leg area, and said he leg was pinned under the dash," McDaniel said.
McDaniel says the guard rail saved a bad situation from being much worse.
"They were very lucky. If it weren't for that guard rail, this vehicle could have continued its rollover down the embankment toward Three Rivers Road."
Everyone in the Toyota, which had a Louisiana license plate, was wearing a seat belt.
Police are investigating why the car veered into the guard rail.
