Last week, hundreds of people gathered at the dock in Gulfport to race in paddle driven dragon boats. The dragon boat race history dates back to the original Greek Olympics with big prizes and pride on the line for the winners.
There were no gold medals or sacks of gold awarded at the Dragon Boat Races in Gulfport. But there was plenty of competition, friendly competition among dragon boat teams, from local banks, casinos, hospitals, media, utilities, other businesses and yes the Navy, and just groups of friends.
The real payoff at the finish line was to the United Way of South Mississippi. Some $30,000 was raised for the programs supported by the United Way. Congratulations to the United Way and to every participant.
