GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A 21-year-old man is the latest victim of gun violence in north Gulfport.
It started at 11:30 Wednesday morning with reports of a shooting on 34th Ave. and Ganges St. About 40 minutes later, the case turned to a homicide investigation.
Neighbors say the crime has rocked their community.
"I just saw him lying in the roadway. I just saw him; I just thought someone passed out," said Senaritha Freeman.
Freeman says she was stunned after learning that the young man she saw on the ground had actually been shot.
"All I can say is it's just terrible. It's terrible," said Freeman.
Deanna Plummer rushed home after hearing about the shooting from a friend.
"She saw a young man in the street with a white t-shirt on full of blood, and she said she didn't know if he was shot or what," said Plummer.
Gulfport police say the man was shot at least once in the chest. Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove identified the victim as Stanton Saunders of Gulfport.
"He was transported to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:09 p.m. from a gunshot wound to the chest," said Hargrove.
Investigators continued to comb the crime scene, searching for evidence. Yellow tape stretched from behind the Isiah Fredericks Community Center to 34th Ave. Police say it appeared the victim was trying to run away from someone before he collapsed.
"I'm just, myself, afraid of guns and I wish it would stop. It's sad. It's very sad and we're killing each like this out here for no reason," said Plummer.
Police do not have a suspect at this time. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959, or submit tips online at www.mscoastcrimestoppers.com.
