GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Twelve hours after a nearby shooting left a 21-year-old dead, another shooting - just blocks away on the same side of Hwy. 49 - claimed the life of Chavis Allen.
After being shot in the chest at his home on Dogwood Ct. around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night, Allen made his way to Juanita Page's house for help.
"Just bamming, bamming on my door, and I was in the back room in the bed. So when I....opened the door, he just fell in the door," said Page, who has known Allen since he was a child.
Doctors and nurses at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport tried to save Allen's life, but the 38 year old succumbed to his wounds at 4:23 a.m. Wednesday.
"He told me, 'Neet, I've been shot. They shot me in my own house. They shot me,'" recalled Page, Allen's next-door neighbor. "I held his head, got a towel and just wiped his face."
In the meantime, all family and friends of Chavis Allen have are prayers delivered in person; led by two ministers who know the area well.
"My heart wasn't satisfied until I came to this home. I just found out about it this morning. So I had to get here before I did anything else to pray with this family," said Rev. Kimble Otis, who raised his sons on Holly Circle.
Minister Ronnie Powell of First Missionary Baptist Church in Pass Christian was good friends with Allen. The pair had a conversation just two weeks before Allen was killed.
"We talked about Christ and getting back into Christ. He told me himself that he was saved and it was already put on his heart to come back to Christ," said Powell.
Nineteen-year-old Gary Desean Perkins has been arrested and charged with Allen's death. Perkins in the Harrison County Jail on a $1 million bond.
