Gulfport green-lights area for to-go cup law

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - You'll soon be able to walk around part of Gulfport with an alcohol drink in a to-go cup. Tuesday night, Gulfport city leaders gave the green light for Mississippi's new law and drew out the lines for where you'll be able to enjoy a drink and take a stroll.

That area will be along Highway 90 between the Island View Casino and Shaggy's restaurant. It will also include the Gulfport Harbor and the downtown area up Highway 49 to the railroad tracks.

In May, Governor Phil Bryant signed what's been dubbed the 'go cup' bill into law. This law will allow people to carry to-go cups of alcohol out of bars and restaurants in designated areas. The measure will apply to cities with downtown entertainment districts. Each interested city will have to establish a zone in which patrons would be allowed open containers.

City leaders in Ocean Springs, Long Beach and Bay St. Louis are also in the process of creating entertainment districts for this law.

The law goes into effect on July 1.
