HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

The flight care director for Ochsner Medical Center addressed Harrison County supervisors this morning, asking if the board would consider a plan to have a medical helicopter based on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Currently, when helicopter transport is needed for a trauma patient, the chopper must come from New Orleans, Hattiesburg or Mobile.

Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan said having a medical helicopter stationed here would provide the "missing link" in the emergency and trauma care network on the coast.

Cost is obviously a consideration in any of the decision making. The average cost of a single medical helicopter flight is around $35,000.

Supervisors requested more information about the cost of such service and whether it might be shared with other counties. They will receive an update from Ochsner in the near future.
