BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - June 6, 2015 was a day baseball fans on the Mississippi Gulf Coast had been waiting for. The Biloxi Shuckers took the field for the first time at MGM Park, and fans were treated to a wonderful park opening experience.
Biloxi battled with the Mobile BayBears for 14 innings. The game lasted more than four hours. The Shuckers won the game 5-4 in front of 3,759 people, but that wasn't the season-opening game. Due to construction delays at MGM Park, the Shuckers played their entire April and May home schedule on the road.
Since opening day at MGM Park, all of the construction work, including the south entrance to the stadium and the parking garage, have been completed. The Shuckers also unveiled the team's new mascot, Schooner the Seagull.
The Shuckers ended the season with 75 wins and 62 loses. The team fell short in game five of the Southern League Championship Series losing to the Chattanooga Lookouts 4-0.
Besides baseball, MGM Park has played host to several other events including concerts by Flo Rida, Dr. John and the Nite Trippers and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. Cruisin the Coast, Easter egg hunt and Independence Day celebrations were also held inside the park.
Also happening on the diamond, the MGCCC Bulldogs played their home games this year at the park.
In April, the Shuckers hosted an exhibition game against their parent club, the Milwaukee Brewers. More than 5,000 fans packed into the park to see the home team take on the professionals. The Shuckers lost 7-4.
Looking ahead, MGM park will host the Conference USA Baseball Championships in 2017 and 2018. There will also be an option for the park to host the tournament in 2019.
