An illegal assault of another person is bad enough. But it is particularly cruel when pure hate motivates an assault. Not hate of a specific person, but rather hate of a class of people because of their race, ethnicity, sex, or religion. Hate crimes carry additional sentences.
Now our neighbors in Louisiana have declared assaults on law enforcement officers "hate crimes" that carry additional sentences. Some people would argue officers don't need this additional protection, that it only waters down protection of other groups.
Those who serve and protect must have laws that protect them. Whether Mississippi labels it a hate crime or the "Don't you dare attack the police law;" there should be tough penalties for those who single out and attack our officers.
