SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources announced Tuesday the 2016-2017 shrimp season will open in state waters Monday. That means fresh gulf shrimp will soon be available.
Officials said the recreational and commercial season will open at 6 a.m. on June 6. Shrimp season north of the Intracoastal Waterway will close at midnight on Dec. 31. It will close at that same time on April 30, 2017 south of the waterway.
Licensed live bait shrimping is open year-round. All boats catching or transporting shrimp must be licensed or permitted by the DMR.
The DMR Marine Patrol is offering free Turtle Excluder Device checks to shrimpers. If you would like to request a courtesy inspection, please call 228-523-4134.
