SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

A full day of Memorial Day tributes began bright and early at 7:30 as folks gathered under Barksdale Pavilion at Gulfport's Jones Park.

At Biloxi National Cemetery, Senator Roger Wicker told the crowd, "We pause, we remember, and we give thanks."

"We honor the dead by making a promise to be the kind of country that deserves their sacrifice," Wicker said.

The emotional ceremony near the gravestones ended with Taps by the 81st Training Wing from Keesler Air Force Base.

The Veterans Tribute Tower in Gautier was a fitting site for another Memorial Day ceremony. More than 100 people gathered in front of Gautier City Hall to remember our nation's heroes in a patriotic tribute.

And in D'Iberville, the city's Town Green was decked out in red, white, and blue for the holiday. You can see and hear more from all of these solemn tributes throughout the day on WLOX News Now.
