GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A kitchen fire prompted the evacuation of an entire apartment complex Thursday night Gulfport.

According to Gulfport Fire Battalion Chief Chris Henderson the fire started around 8:30 p.m. at the South Pointe Apartments off 45th Ave. in Gulfport, just south of Memorial Hospital.

When firefighters arrived on scene they saw heavy smoke coming from the south building second-floor unit.

Anderson said it took firefighters around 10 minutes to knock out the fire. However, battling the smoke took longer.

The Red Cross arrived on scene to assess which residents would need a place to stay if they were not allowed back into their unit.

Henderson said four units may not be livable.

Fire investigators are expected to find out what happened in the kitchen that started the fire.
