SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

With the first big holiday weekend of the summer tourism season fast approaching, expectations for a good weekend are running high.

One of the main reasons is an almost perfect weather forecast. A quick check of the WLOX First Alert Weather app on your smartphone shows there's only a 10 percent chance of rain both Saturday and Sunday. That increases only slightly to 20 percent on Memorial Day.

The Wingate Hotel in Gulfport is completely booked for the three days. Greg Stewart, the director of historic Beauvoir, says he expects crowds to double this weekend. And the owner Big Play, a popular family attraction, also has high hopes.

The Thursday morning crowd at Bayview Gourmet in Ocean Springs was significantly larger than a typical Thursday. And at the Great Southern Golf Club, tee times are booked solid for the weekend.

Perhaps the biggest smiles belong to beach vendors. With sunny skies and no rain, they expect to make a lot of money from the tourists visiting our area this weekend.
