Biloxi sat atop the Southern League South Division standings for 35 days before Mobile knocked the Shuckers from that perch on Wednesday. The BayBears opened the six game series with a 9-1 victory over the Shuckers at Hank Aaron Stadium.
For the fourth time in five attempts Biloxi suffered a defeat to open a series in the month of May. Biloxi is now three games under .500 in the second month of the 2016 season with a 10-13 record.
Mobile (20-25) jumped on Biloxi (26-19) starter Brandon Woodruff for three runs in the first inning.
Evan Marzilli opened the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Lldemaro Vargas. Kevin Medrano singled to center to give the BayBears the early lead. Ronnie Freeman cracked a two run double to center field and Mobile led 3-0.
Woodruff (0-2) pitched five innings, allowed four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts on 92 pitches.
The Shuckers scored their lone run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly ball to center that scored Nick Ramirez from third base.
Tyler Spurlin relieved Woodruff. He pitched two-thirds of an inning, gave up 2 runs on 1 hit with 1 strikeout. Jed Bradley pitched 2.1 innings and gave up 3 runs on six hits with 2 strikeouts.
John Omahen (W, 3-4) pitched 8.1 innings for Mobile. The Shuckers had 8 hits off Omahen and scored 1 run with 5 strikeouts.
The Shuckers and BayBears play a doubleheader at Hank Aaron Stadium beginning 5:05 p.m. Thursday. Adrian Houser (2-4, 6.38 ERA) will get the starting nod in game one for the Shuckers. Zach Godley (2-5, 3.83 ERA) is slated to be on the mound for Mobile.
The Shuckers return home at MGM Park Friday night hosting Mobile.
