JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Wednesday, two Jonesboro police officers were commended for their lifesaving efforts Tuesday evening.

Corporal Jason Chester and Sergeant Trey Dupuy were among many first responders searching for a missing teen who had been swept away by floodwaters.

After more than two hours of searching, the two decided to back track to where Jacob Hunter initially went missing.

Sgt. Dupuy said he leaned down near a storm drain and heard a faint cry for help.

That's when he and Cpl. Chester sprang into action to save the boy.

"God definitely protected this kid because people are saying 'heroes' and 'we saved this kid,'" Sgt. Dupuy said. "We just happened to be at the right place at the right time to pull him out of there but we didn't do any saving. It was a higher power that saved that child."

Cpl. Chester also commended the other men and women who joined in the search efforts for hours on end.

"Basically the community came together as a whole to help search for this child," Cpl. Chester said. "Me and Sergeant Dupuy were a very small part of this. It was an effort from everybody."

Just weeks ago, Sgt. Dupuy was suspended and Cpl. Chester was given a letter of council after they took part in the parking protest at City Hall.

Chief Elliott said their continued commitment to the city shows how dedicated they are as law enforcement officers.

"You have to take it one day at a time. You deal with a situation one day at a time and you go on. We don't harp on the past. We deal with it," Chief Elliott said. "The past is the past and we move on. This job is always filled with new events every day and challenges every day so we don't look back at the past."
