SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

Just in time for the long Memorial Day weekend, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality lifted four of five water contact advisories on Wednesday.

MDEQ says it's safe to swim again in waters off of Gulfport Harbor Beach from 20th Ave east to Thornton Avenue, Long Beach from Oak Gardens Ave. to Girard Ave., Lakeshore Beach near Lakeshore Dr., from the Silver Slipper Casino east to Poinset, and Buccaneer State Park Beach from 100 yards west of the sign eastward to 100 yards east of the sign.

Only one section of the Mississippi Sound remains under a water contact advisory. MDEQ advises against swimming in waters off of Gulfport East Beach from Tegarden Rd. east to Anniston Ave. because current high bacteria levels can lead to a higher chance of getting sick.

MDEQ will lift the advisory when water samples show that bacteria levels are safe for human contact again.
