PICAYUNE, MS (WLOX) - A Picayune man is accused of shooting at police officers Tuesday night. The suspect, James Hart, is now in intensive care at a Hattiesburg hospital after getting shot two times by an officer.
Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said the shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. in a convenience store parking lot.
"The detectives noticed a vehicle circling the parking lot several times," said Magri. "They were playing very loud music."
Magri said the detectives, sitting in an unmarked car, turned on their blue lights to conduct a traffic stop, but Hart, 53, reportedly got out of his vehicle and started walking away. That's when things heated up.
"The officers gave several verbal commands to stop. The suspect then turned and shot one round at the officer. At this point, the officer gave foot chase, numerous commands to drop the weapon and stop running, but the suspect refused."
Magri reports the officer then shot several rounds at the suspect, hitting him once in the upper body and once in the leg. Hart was taken to an area hospital then airlifted to Forrest General Hospital.
Hart faces a list of charges including aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, disorderly conduct, failure to comply and resisting arrest by fleeing.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is leading the investigation. The detective involved in the shooting is on administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
