Gulfport police looking for 'armed and dangerous' murder suspect

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport police are asking for your help to find a man wanted on charges of murder, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of armed robbery.

Sgt. Damon McDaniel said police are looking for 24-year-old J'Var Vontou Pope in connection with a triple shooting that left one man dead and two others injured on April 6.

Pope is accused of shooting and robbing Eugene Weathersby, Mitchell Weathersby and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Authorities say Pope should be considered armed and dangerous.

McDaniel said police were first called to the scene that night to investigate a car crash with injuries at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Tennessee Ave.

Eugene was driving the car, and police found he had been shot in the chest. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.

While police were working the crash, dispatchers told officers there were shooting victims near the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Louisiana Ave. That's where police found Mitchell and Lewis suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both men were taken to the hospital for treatment, but according to Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove, Mitchell died less than an hour after the gunshots rang out. Eugene and Lewis were released from the hospital after recovering from surgery.

Investigators said the nightmare started while Eugene, Mitchell and Lewis where hanging out near a building in the 15100 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.

McDaniel said Pope walked up to the three men, pulled out a gun, demanded money and pulled the trigger.

After the alleged shooting, Pope reportedly ran from the scene and Eugene drove away in a vehicle, which he crashed just a short time later.

If you have any idea where Pope could be, please call the Gulfport Police Department at 228-868-5959 and Crime Stoppers at 1-877-787-5898.
