Five sections of the Mississippi Sound not safe for swimming

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality issued a water contact advisory Tuesday for Gulfport East Beach from Tegarden Road east to Anniston Avenue. That now makes two sections of water in Gulfport under water contact advisories. The other location is Gulfport Harbor Beach from 20th Avenue east to Thornton Avenue.

Other areas already under water contact advisories are Long Beach from Oak Gardens Avenue to Girard Avenue, Lakeshore Beach near Lakeshore Drive from the Silver Slipper Casino east to Poinset, and Buccaneer State Park Beach from 100 yards west of the sign eastward to 100 yards east of the sign.

MDEQ warns if you swim in these parts of the Mississippi Sound, the current high bacteria levels mean you have a higher chance of getting sick.

MDEQ will lift the advisories when water samples show that bacteria levels are safe for human contact again.
