OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Major improvements are underway at two properties operated by the Gulf Coast Research Lab in Ocean Springs.
At the main campus on East Beach, $200,000 in state tidelands money is being used to repair and expand the docking piers and dredge the channel leading into the harbor.
This is being done to accommodate larger research vessels, including the RV Jim Franks. Currently, the larger vessels are docked at the Point Cadet Marina in Biloxi.
At the Cedar Point site, $16 million in FEMA money is being used to build several large facilities. These include classrooms, public meeting space, a public marine education center and an outdoor pavilion, which overlooks Davis Bayou.
These new buildings will replace the old marine education center at Point Cadet, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Work on the harbor should be complete by late this summer, while work at Cedar Point is scheduled to be complete sometime next year.
