SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Buckle down or pay up. That's the message for the Click It or Ticket campaign that runs from May 23 to June 5.
Over that two week period, law enforcement officers all across the country will be cracking down on seat belt enforcement.
It's a campaign that's aimed at saving lives, and it kicks off just before the Memorial Day holiday, which is one of the most traveled weekends of the year.
"Hundreds of thousands of citizens will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend, as well as throughout the summer vacation season," said George County Sheriff Keith Havard in a news release. "We want to make sure that people are buckling up to keep themselves and their families safe. It is the greatest defense in a vehicle crash."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, nearly 50 percent of fatal crash victims in 2015 were not wearing seat belts.
