MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - Imagine laying a loved on to rest and paying for a headstone to honor their memory only to have the monument company close its doors and disappear. That's exactly what happened to more than 40 people who purchased headstones from Davis Monuments in Moss Point.
Jason Davis said he lost his lease on the property where he ran his monument company and was locked out of the office. That meant he was unable to secure his files with the information needed to fill orders, leaving his customers waiting for months.
"The files and everything were kept in the office. I could not get to them until the first part of April," Davis explained.
Since getting those files back, Davis has been contacting frustrated clients.
"As of to date, I think all of them have been contacted, except for six people we could not get in touch with," Davis said.
Kristine Dale is one of Davis clients. She paid $1,043 for a headstone for her husband's grave.
"I gave him the money in January and never heard from him. So we tried to check on him and we could never get a hold of him," Dale said. "I thought I had lost the money and everything else and my children were very very upset about it, and that's when they contacted you. We didn't know where else to turn."
I told her that I had made contact with Davis and that he promised to get her headstone. Davis said it may take a little while, but that he's working with another company.
"I feel a lot better and I hope that he keeps in touch. Anything is better than nothing," Dale said.
