GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A blessing of the cranes ceremony celebrated a milestone day at the Port of Gulfport on Thursday.
The three Chinese gantry cranes are not in place and operating at the Port of Gulfport. More than 100 dignitaries, elected officials and invitees were on the port property for the blessing of the cranes. Meanwhile, Port Director Jonathan Daniels says the cranes are big game-changers, and mean the future expansion of the port will go forward as planned.
"It's a sea change for us," said Daniels. "We've already received several inquiries because the new cranes have arrived. We did not have the type of equipment necessary, the efficiency that's necessary, that a lot of these state of the art container terminals. So what we have here, and what arrived from Shanghai, is really the next generation of cargo handling for the port of Gulfport."
Gov. Phil Bryant also attended the blessing. Bryant says that after the devastation brought by Katrina, many people thought rebuilding was impossible. However, the cranes prove that that is not the case.
