72 rescues headed to GA help overcrowding at Jackson Co. Animal Shelter

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - It was a somewhat bittersweet morning at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. That's because shelter employees and volunteers said goodbye to 72 dogs and cats.

The animals were loaded onto a special cargo truck bound for Atlanta, GA. The Atlanta Humane Society is accepting the animals to help meet the need of people looking to adopt pets in that urban area.

It's good news for Jackson County, since it helps reduce the ongoing overcrowding issue the local shelter faces.

It so happens that Jackson County has a fortuitous connection with Atlanta. The director of the Atlanta Humane Society is the former director of the Jackson County shelter.

The animals transported today included cats, puppies and full grown dogs.
