OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - High school students are stepping up and doing good things at area elementary schools.
Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves took part in a ceremony at Ocean Springs High School on Wednesday honoring students participating in the Big Brother Big Sister ambassador mentor program.
Seniors Sara Jones and James Pate-Clearman both received awards for helping and befriending elementary school students.
Both say they see positive results from the younger children they mentor.
"According to the other teachers, apparently my visiting her alone and just being her friend started to make positive changes in her life," said Jones. "She was smiling in class, she started wearing makeup, giggling, she got really close with a bunch of other students and so it was really awesome."
Each mentor student is assigned one child to spend time with throughout the year.
