Sheriff: Fatal-deputy involved shooting started as a drug call

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - We are learning more details about the fatal deputy-involved shooting that left one man dead overnight in St. Martin.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said deputies were called to the Ramada Inn on Tucker Rd. around 1:20 a.m. Monday to investigate possible drug activity in a guest room.

Ezell said a suspect became "aggressively combative" toward the responding deputy and a fight ensued. During the fight, another deputy showed up to assist in arresting the suspect.

Ezell said the fight involving the suspect and two deputies escalated until one of the deputies shot the suspect. The man died at the scene, according to Ezell.

The names of the deputies and shooting victim are not being released at this time. Ezell said both deputies have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation moves forward.

The mother of the suspect who was killed said he had a 5-year-old son. She said she first learned about the shooting through Facebook, and wants to know why she wasn't notified before authorities sent his body to Jackson for an autopsy.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is handling the case with the help of the district attorney's office. Findings will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is complete.
